2 cups water
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup roughly chopped fresh mint leaves
32 fluid ounces Kentucky bourbon
8 sprigs fresh mint leaves for garnish
Combine water, sugar and chopped mint leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat until the sugar is completely dissolved. Allow syrup to cool for approximately 1 hour. Pour syrup through a strainer to remove the mint leaves.
Fill eight cups or frozen goblets with crushed ice and pour 4 ounces of bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup in each. You can always add a little more of one or the other to suit your taste (or stamina). Add a mint sprig for garnish, if you like. A cute little straw adds a nice touch too. Trim the straws to barely extend beyond the top of the cups. A "real" Southern Belle serves her guests their juleps on a silver platter, but this is totally optional. ;)
- You can always make enough syrup to store in the refrigerator for another day.
- If for some strange reason you are using those silver goblets described above, place them in the freezer for at least half an hour before serving.
