Does Anyone Recognize This Child Known as Baby Grace?

advertisement

I was amazed after doing a search here on "Baby Grace", that a news site as large as Newsvine had not reported more, and/or commented more on this tragic story. Is it possible, due to my locality, I am more aware of this horrific case?

The impression I'm getting from our local news stations, is this has turned into an international plea for help in identifying this little girl. I naturally assumed Newsvine would be in the forefront in hopes of finding clues to identity Baby Grace. Below I've listed particulars regarding this case:

Late Monday, October 29, a fisherman discovered a blue Sterlite-brand utility box on a marshy, grassy island near Green's Cut, about five miles west-southwest of the Galveston Causeway. This island is only accessible by boat.

Inside the container were the remains of a little girl wrapped in plastic bags. She had suffered multiple skull fractures and had been dead for several weeks. She is believed to be between 2 and 3 years old. She was 32 – 34 inches tall and weighed between 25 – 30 pounds.

The little girl had blond hair to the middle of her back and was wearing a pink ¾ length sleeve pullover top and a pink skirt. Both were the Cherokee brand sized 2T(a Target brand). One of the composite sketches shows the clothing she was wearing when found.

The child also wore size 8.5 white and purple tennis shoes with small lights in the heels. These shoes can only be purchased at Wal-Mart.

I know this is a macabre, gruesome news story … definitely not the norm for me. But, I feel a need to do my part to possibly help identify this beautiful little girl. This little girl could be from just about anywhere. So, no matter where you live, please take a good look at these composite sketches.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Galveston County Sheriff's Office at 409-766-2222 or 866-248-8477.

I know someone has to be looking for this beautiful child. You never know. You or someone you know may be able to identify her.

Unfortunately, the someone that should be looking for her is probably the same someone that put her there.

I agree with you 100%, vacelts. But there are relatives, neighbors, friends of friends, etc. that could possibly identify her. Or, she could be one of many missing children who have been abducted. Until someone comes forward, it is still a guessing game at this point.

This horror tugs at my heart and brings tears to my eyes.

Totally agree. As a mom of two toddlers (who drive me crazy at times), I don't understand how anyone can abandon/forget/neglect a child. How can no one be looking for this child?

I don't know what infuriates me more. That someone would do this to a child or that someone who is suppose to be love and care for this child is probably the culprit!

They both bother me.

What worries me is as time goes by and she is not identified, the media will back off as they always do, and she will fall through the cracks. We have to humanize this little girl ... not let her become just "remains that were found" washed up on a small island.

That is my greatest fear.

Eric, Galveston is about 50 miles south of Houston. The child may not be from this area though. Galveston does have a port where cruise ships depart ... the Port of Houston is more commercial.

With the Port of Galveston and the Port of Houston in the vicinity, she could be from anywhere. Considering all the press coverage this case has received, I feel someone would have identified her by now if she was local.

With all the bungling and misinformation around Maddie's case it seems that there is still a possibility that Grace is Maddie, no?

I don't know exactly how they ruled out Maddie. Unless, it was the forensic dental examination that ruled the girl to be between 2 - 3 years old and Maddie is 4. I'm just speculating though.

What I heard on the evening news here, there are 3 women who have reported their daughters missing that fit Baby Grace's description. All 3 girls had been taken by their fathers. These women are from 3 different states, one being New York, I think one was Mississippi but I honestly can't remember all 3.

Something that tugs at your conscience, this report. Surprised it had not made Newsvine. Well done Nance for bringing it some attention on the Vines. There are many strands to Citizen Journalism; this is often the sort that does not get airplay because it appears local.

My immediate reaction when I first started reading this was Maddy McCann. Seems far fetched but I'll have a look at CCat's seed next.

Raat ... I felt compelled to bring this to everyone's attention. It has been over a week, with a lot of media attention locally. However, the location where Baby Grace was found leaves it wide open to international possibilities. She could be from anywhere.

I am in hopes that someone will see her composite sketch and recognize her. Or maybe, know of someone who has a child that has not been in school, daycare or maybe just not around for several weeks. Something.

It is hard to believe no one would have filed a Missing Persons Report on such a lovely child (although I believe all children are lovely). That would indicate perhaps those closest to her had something to do with her murder. It boggles the mind.

Kathleen,

She was lovely, and from what I've seen she appeared to be well cared for.

If I'm not mistaken, most little girls around her age that had been reported missing have been ruled out. I don't know the particulars or stats, but I will see if I can find info on that.

My concern has NOTHING to do with the fact this was a cute, white, blonde child. It is because she was a defenseless child and should have been protected from this horror. Someone knows who this child is and I will do the best I can with what I've been given to help. What are you doing that is useful?

I too provided a "useful link" to a website in comment #2. The Laura Recovery Center for Missing Children is sponsoring the referenced site. The Center was founded by a father who actually had a child abducted and murdered. Sorry ... I'm not sure what color his daughter's hair was.

Nance, there's no need to be combative. Nobody is questioning your motives. Did I misconstrue this comment as well? If I did, then I apologize. This happens often when communicating absent body language and inflection of voice. It is much easier to ascertain when face-to-face.

As for my stance on the inequalities from the media, sure there's no doubt in my mind their is partiality. As I said, each of us can only do what we can do on a daily basis. I am only trying to keep the interest sparked so the "media" won't let another child fall through the cracks once this tragic story gets stale. Someone knows who this little girl is. There is no doubt in my mind about this.

Memnoch25,

First, I want to commend you for your heartfelt apology. Most people would have just gone on about their business or to another article.

This is such an emotional issue and it touches most people at the very core of their being. I know it has me. I for one understand a "knee-jerk" reaction, as that was my initial response as well.

There is no doubt in my mind bias exists when it comes to media attention. It is totally unfair, and something needs to be done about it. What? I don't have a clue. But I did not intend for this article to address that problem. It was meant to get the word out while this case is still "warm".

I felt the need to do whatever I could to try and identify this child AND hopefully find out who is to blame for her death.

Nance, we had a similar situation in Kansas City, with Precious Doe in 2001. See Wikipedia's brief article.

Most of the city was so outraged that no one ever claimed her as missing, that she truly became the city's own child. Many of us felt the pain of her circumstance and could not put an end to our feelings until the truth was found. It was a blessing to have a whole community who cared, but you know what? Even if you are the only one who has taken the time to open your heart and care about her...she's been cared about. However, I do hope your community bonds in the effort to put this little soul and her story to rest.

I also recognised the similarities to the Precious Doe case. It turned out the people who would have reported her missing were the ones responsible.

I do remember the Precious Doe case. I understand the father got the death penalty ... what about the little girl's mother?

susanclaire, thank you for understanding where I am coming from. I may not be able to do anything about ALL the missing children on this planet, but I will do the best I can one child at a time. If we all took the time to care, just one child at a time maybe, just maybe we COULD make a difference.

Oh, rottlady. This sickens me. The stepfather gets the death penalty and the mom cops a plea. He may have been the one who kicked the child, but the mother is the one who let her die THEN helped dispose of her little body. Her own mother!

It's hard to even wrap my mind around. It really devastated the whole Kansas City community. I believe they still have some kind of an event remembering that poor little girl. Held close to where her body was found.

It is VERY hard to understand. Being a mother myself, I don't get women who put men before their children. But, this was the ultimate betrayal.

I think that what makes this story so horrifying is the fact that she was found and in the condition that she was found in. What many of us don't want to realize is that there are thousands of 'Baby Graces', except they are never found. So many children go missing every day, many don't even get reported.
I truely hope she is identifed, more importantly, her murderer is captured.
But, we can't forget about all the other missing children in the world.

Yes, we should not forget all the missing children.

Still, sometimes one particular child catches one person's attention for a reason. In those cases, I think it is important to follow our emotions.

We can never forget the children, but we have to take them one by one as they present themselves, especially if they are right here in our backyards.

Don't get desensitized people. Don't think just because the figures are overwhelming we can do nothing. Don't say in an essence, just deal with it ... that's just the way the world is today. I can't ... no I won't accept that.

I'm really happy to see this article on the Vine ... and the discussion of all the other lost, missing, and unidentified children out there.

Cases like this bring the overall missing children situation back to the forefront, where it should be. This unfortunate little girl has been chosen to be the "silent spokesperson" for them this time.

I pray she'll be ID'd and the assailants get what they gave her.

Thank you DebKee. It has become an epidemic, IMHO. Now we also have to worry about human trafficking as well. That's another can of worms I'd rather stay away from at this point in time.

It breaks my heart that "Baby Grace" has to be the poster child for missing children. I doubt our judicial system would ever give this little girl's assailants what they gave her. Not in a million years. That would be "cruel and inhumane" punishment ... emotionless as well. I have the sinking feeling someone this child loved and/or trusted did this to her. I could be wrong, but my gut tells me I am not.

Maybe this is far fetched, but could it be possible that the one person who would have cared, aware and searching -- perhaps mom -- was also put to death and has yet to be discovered?

AD ... that is very possible. I have thought of that maybe being the case as well.

Is there any data available where a mom/girlfriend and child have both been reported missing? Or, is there a wife/girlfriend and child who have gone on an "unexpected", extended vacation? There are so many variables. It is perplexing and extremely frustrating.

Today the Galveston County Daily News reported tips continue to pour in. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office is presently investigating more than 280 leads, but no one has come forward to claim the little girl as yet.

280 leads and rising. This all sounds so overwhelming.

Please everyone ... we really do need your help to identify this child. If you feel compelled to help get the word out, forward this link by email to everyone in your email contact list.

The flyer can also be downloaded, printed and posted anywhere and everywhere. Location is not limited to the Galveston bay area. Think international, as Galveston is not only a tourist location, but a location where cruise liners arrive and depart as well.

Frank,

I saw your heartfelt email earlier and it touched me.

Thank you so much for helping. We all know how the media can be after a week or so. The rest of us have to do our part to try and keep this child's story alive the best we can. Someone knows who this little girl is.

Thank you!!!!

Celestina, this is very difficult for me to think about as well. My being only 50 miles away AND the fact that I "know" has a lot to do with my participation and drive.

Thank you so much for posting here. You don't know how much that means to me. Think about it ... it may only take one person ... the right person to see this and make a difference. Thank you!
