Eight Things Y'all May or May Not Want to Know About Nance

Tue Jul 17, 2007 2:59 PM EDT
odd-news, friends, 8-things, personal-information, nance

OK … since I've been tagged "twice" in less than 24 hours, I feel guilty compelled to oblige. Tagged 1st by mel, then by Walt D . Oh, and by the way, did I say THANKS A LOT y'all? If not, THANKS A LOT!

Rules 1st … I hate rules. Can that be one of my 8?

1. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
2. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
5. Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.

Yea … this will be fun. I'm gonna go way, way, way back in time, as I'm a pretty open person if y'all hadn't noticed. Y'all probably already know what's up with me lately.

1. I had a crush on Eddie Fisher when I was 2 or 3 years old. I don't remember this, but my 91-year old mom loves to tease me about it to this day.

2. I was a climber from the get-go. I would climb just about anything. Trees, stop signs, closet doors (yea … I'd shimmy up the sides of the door facing with my feet and sit on top of the door and swing). I didn't have a problem entertaining myself … I'd create my own fun if there was nothing better to do.

3. I have a fear (phobia) of heights. Where the heck did that come from?

4. I got lost at an amusement park when I was about 4-years old … I still have "abandonment issues" over that one.

5. I was the "Gossip Editor" for my elementary school newspaper. Heh —heh … that was really fun.

6. I joined the Brownies and the Girl Scouts just to get to go to summer camp. The minute my mom would drop me off, whoosh … I'd be gone. All the other little kids would be hanging on to their mom's leg crying, "Nooooo! Please don't leave me here!!!" Two weeks later when she came to pick me up she'd find me sitting under a tree crying (I didn't want to leave) while all the other kids were running gleefully to be rescued by "mom". That kinda hurt Mom's feelings a tad, but I just couldn't help it. I was an independent little xhit, even "way" back then.

7. Robert Gunther (I still hate that ugly red-headed guy) who sat behind me in the 5th grade ratted me out for having a pack of cigarettes in my purse. Was that my 1st trip to the principal's office? Hummm, I don't think so. Lie even if there are pictures … always.

8. Hitchhiked with my best friend from Houston to Nuevo Laredo in the summer of '68 (at 17 years old). Tried to sneak a bottle of tequila back across the border, but got busted. I think if we hadn't opened it 1st, we would have been OK. All they did was take it away from us. How much do you wanna bet they drank it?

Yes … now it's my turn to spread the "joy". I now tag Nycam, Robbie Lawrence, Tim Boothby, Tom Bombadil, "Wild" Bill Harrison, Bartleby, Azsky13, and last but not least ... Brenda Mayer.

Revision ... How many of these will I have to make???

Brenda Mayer has now turned into Bodhi1. Oh dear!

Azsky 13 has now turned into schnoo. Do we have a gender disaster happening here?

Don't make me do this again, ya hear???

Nance....

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was so glad to see your column! I have to tell you that my daughter and I got separated at a restaurant in Houston, while visiting friends from high school. She screamed and cried and I couldn't find her.. it was a big place I promise! She is still afraid to be alone, so I totally get where you are coming from on that one!

I was the PTA Newsletter chairperson.. which of course meant gossip columnist! I am not sure you want to hear this one, but I was born in 1968...

Thanks again for participating and by the way I tagged Brenda first!

Would love to read some of that gossip that you edited in elementary school. Hope you've got over Eddie. There's plenty more fish in the ocean!

What do you mean by that? I think it went over my head.

Nance - I should have explained about double tags. It seems that as this thang has spread, it will prove difficult to not have at least one tag that someone else has already reached.

So just like both Mel and Walt tagged you, you don'thave to withdraw if someone else has already got to the same person. Unless you wanna go into new territory:-)

Ardith, you know very well that we all consider you one of "us". We will even give you a pass to cross the border with no interrogation what-so-ever. Just don't try to smuggle any turkeys into our "country" ... unless it's anytime close to Thanksgiving.

OK, y'all. When is this Texvine Meet and who's large and in charge? We gotta get the ball rolling on this one. "Viners" partying Texas style will be an event no one (well, almost no one) will ever forget! Y'all better hurry before the price of tequila increases dramatically.

GET WITH THE PROGRAM, Y'ALL!

I guess the best way to start is just to start, lol. I dunno ...

How about someone volunteering to write an article and post it to the Texvine Community group? Maybe with a poll included with specific weekend dates for everyone to choose from. I know this will be a "scheduling" nightmare, but if we could start now we can plan for sometime in the Fall so Brenda can be included too.

Speaking of Brenda, did you ever get a hold of her by email? I'm a "worrier" as well. So, if we know when she will be available we can work from there.

I'm still believing that the Hill Country (Central Texas thereabouts) would be the best location for everyone, as Texas is so darn big. Easy flights into the Austin airport as well.

I'm more than happy to be on the "Texvine Meet Committee". We just need to somehow get a plan of action ... or just a plan, lol.

What do you think?

I am volunteering.. I will post it tonight.. I think Central Texas is the best place, that way everyone can join in the fun and the drive will be the same for the Dallasites and Houstonians.

The West Texas people (maybe the panhandle people as well) may still have to fly into Austin. Man ... El Paso is 1/2 way to California from Houston. Made that trip to CA by car a few times and the U-Haul nightmare twice.

Settle down, Ardith. We said "Central Texas" ... the Austin area so people from all over the state can come. People from the Panhandle and El Paso, Brownsville will find it easier to make it as it will be centrally located.

Hi everyone,

I'm baaaaack! I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy seeing the comments about me. That's so sweet. I finally got around to posting my 8 things, but their nowhere near as good as yours.

Love the tequila episode. My only brush with alcohol and the law was when I was taken in by the Philly police for underage drinking at 16 at a house party. My parents were not amused. Actually, that's a lie. I just remembered one other time in college. But that's a longer story.

Yea ... I'm a walking contradiction.

I climbed trees as a kid, but am NOW afraid of heights. Wonder if I blocked something? Like falling out of a tree on my head or something.

I actually fell out of the tree in our front yard when I was 6 or 7. Funny thing, the tree trunk kinda branched out towards the bottom and formed a V. When I fell, I somehow got my leg caught in the "V" and was dangling upside down screaming, "help me, help me". Some nice man was walking down the sidewalk and got me down. Hadn't thought of that one in a while. Too bad they didn't have video cameras back then. Classic!

I used to love climbing trees when young. Except I didn't know then I was afraid of heights. Getting up was not as much of a problem as then making my way down again. Effin' impossible and usually highly embarrasing when you're putting up a macho man face.

Same with ladders. Mental block kicks in at the top. Given up doing both since.

Well, I know this is going to be very hard for you to believe **cough--cough**, but I was a bit of a show off when I was a kid. Show offs are really not afraid of much really. They (we) are more concerned with entertaining the "crowd" than getting injured.

As long as I had a "crowd" (that would be 1 or more people) I could (and would) do just about anything.

As for Eddie ... you're pretty right on. I was a toddler when I would run to the TV and just stand there and stare at this guy ... he had his own TV show back in the early (shhhhhh) 50s. Do you believe in reincarnation????

Sometimes I wish I weren't do damn honest ... when will I ever learn????

I meant don't go yet, OK?

I love your quote ... especially speechless, breathless, legless. Very descriptive of how I imagine it to be. I would add peaceful, loving and all encompassing.

#7 - do we all have an ugly redhead that tormented us in 5th grade? Gary Martin (no relation to big, ugly, scary, mean, and redheaded Mrs. Martin our teacher) sat behind me & kept kicking my desk. When JFK was shot he blurted out, "I hope he dies so we'll get out of school." Wonder what ever happened to the creep.

heh--heh, gorilla !!!

I was the "orange", or carrot colored hair kid growing up, but I only picked on people that picked on other people. Hey ... I still do that, lol.

As for my "mean" redheaded guy (more that funny auburn kinda red) --- I heard he is still around and owns a -- get this -- "Florist" shop, tee-hee. Dirty rat!!!

Oh, you just gave me a GREAT idea ... should I? Should I not? That is the question. **very evil grin**

OK ... You're a real sweetie, lol. What actress used to say "I vant to be alone"?

I'm sorry, but I misspelled your name in that comment. I forgot all the periods...what ever was I thinking? I said OK instead of .O.K. ... there lies the confusion.

Now ... guess.

OK, .O.K. ... it's Greta Garbo. I give in way too easily. Uhhh, that didn't come out exactly the way I intended it to ... let me think about it and I will rephrase. Maybe.

mel,

My best friend's sister used to live in Canyon City. Well, there are a "few" new stories y'all haven't heard yet, but we'll get to those at some other time, lol. Beautiful country!

As for Ardith ... I think she needs to clarify a few things before my curiosity is satisfied over this turkey smuggling ring. Either that, or I'm REALLY having a blonde moment coupled with horrendous reading comprehension. :)

What do you guys need from me? Remember ... I don't have a life anymore so I have plenty of time on my hands, lol.

Well, if you can help us figure out where to meet that would be great! We loved Canyon Lake and rented condo's there. I am working on the first article and I will send it to you for any comments or revisions. Rapp is working on the logo design... we have been throwing around ideas, but we are completely open on that too.

Do you know who all would be from Texas? I knew the other day there were quite a few of us.

There are 26 members in the Texvine Community group. I don't know how many actually live in Texas. Sam (Samantha) used to live here in Houston, but I think she moved out of state. Then, don't forget Brenda. Did you ever find out what was going on with her? Is she OK?

Actually anyone can attend, IMO. The more the merrier. We can get a bunch of those free "Don't Mess With Texas" bumper stickers for everyone, lol. I've heard you can get them from the roadside parks close to all Texas borders for free. Do you know anything about that?

I'll start checking around for a place in the New Braunfels, Canyon Lake area. Since it will be off season, maybe we won't have a problem.

Oh... I think it should be open too. BrashMonkey's brother lives there and Tim Boothby's family is near Temple, so they are definitely invited.

I am getting excited and those locations would be great, it would still be pretty enough for outdoor stuff and Wimberly is a nice little town.

WHOO HOOO! TEXAS VINEMEET is in FULL SWING!

This is gonna be fun!!! Last I looked it was 100% vote for the Austin area ... whoopie!

Now we just need to toss a few weekend dates out there and see try coordinating this scheduling nightmare, lol.

Once we get the weekend, I'll start doing a search for a place. Hummm, who do I know in that area? One of our brokers lives in Wimberly ... I can pick his brain for a few ideas.

I love Canyon City ... Lake. Marble Falls, Johnson City ... just about anywhere in the Hill Country. I'm sure it will be too late in the season for tubing down the river, but maybe not. Did I say I absolutely love white water tubing? That should have been 1 of my 8, lol. Texas really doesn't have "real" white water ... not like Northern CA, but it is still a lot of fun.
